The Brief

A family of six was facing the challenge of living in an old brick Californian bungalow. Sitting at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, only a short walk to some of Sydney’s iconic beaches and shops, it’s the prime location for a young Sydney family. The 1930’s home was tired and bursting at the seams, in turn outweighing the positives. With an old basement laundry that could only be accessed from the backyard and limited space indoors, it was not fit for a busy, modern family.

The existing bungalow was filled with character; including blue brick exterior, and intricate internal details that can only be found in original architecture of this period. Most importantly, this home had good bones and sat beautifully on the tree lined street, all of which made sense to renovate and build a first-floor addition, designed and built by Cape Cod Australia.

The Results

The ground floor was extensively renovated, including the demolition of most of the original internal walls. While rooms were sacrificed, the reconfigured space introduced a light filled open plan living area with a contemporary kitchen that flows through to the dining and lounge area. A new laundry-bathroom combination was introduced into the reconfigured space alongside the new staircase. Architraves, fretwork and ceiling moldings were salvaged where possible. Where walls were opened up, new architraves were created and new timber frieze’s crafted to mirror the original.
The home gained 3 large and light filled bedrooms upstairs, 2 with raked ceilings, built in robes plus a generous sized Master bedroom complete with an ensuite, walk-in robe and small ‘Juliet’ style balcony that overlooks the back garden and neighbouring dog park. The first-floor addition effectively doubled the footprint of the home, while breathing a new lease of life downstairs.
